Blogtrolls and look out, Sri Lankans.

By on July 3, 2011

Lately the Thinking Vegan’s Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/TheThinkingVegan) has been infiltrated by people in the ag industry – cattle ranchers, dairy ranchers, etc.

From the “plants have feelings too” crowd to “god wants us to eat animals” to “I’ll eat an extra hamburger for you,” we’ve had about all the bases covered. (I must say I love the “I’m eating your share” crowd. It’s so awesomely playground. The next time someone tells me they’re pro-life I’m going to say, “Ha ha, I’m going to abort an extra fetus just for you, sucka.”)

The latest, troll #6, went with the happy meat angle:

“Dont take this in a bad way. But I raise cattle and we feed our cattle before we eat! We meet their needs before ours. Yes there are people that treat animals cruely they’re the ones that have given the whole thing a bad name. Dont judge us all from a small percentage of people…Maybe you should take the time to get to know some of us in animal agriculture before condemning us.”

Sure. Don’t take this in a bad way, but I breed Sri Lankans, keep them confined, and kill them for meat, which I sell to cannibals. Of course there are bad apples in every profession, but most of us take really good care of our Sri Lankans before we kill them. In the mornings, they eat before we do! They’re adorable when they’re young; I get very attached to them. I have cried numerous times when a Sri Lankan got sick and died in my care despite the efforts of our vet. I have cried every time one of my favorite Sri Lankans goes to slaughter. So don’t condemn all of us until you get to know us.

I get so attached to my Sri Lankans when they're at this playful age. Why do they have to grow up? Why?

The really sad thing is, these people just don’t GET IT! And probably never will.

We’ve opted not to post comments from animal exploiters that were submitted to this rant. They were somewhat redundant, some were belligerent, and some bordered on insane. However, I don’t want to imply that we didn’t appreciate receiving them. In case those readers are still paying attention, here are three points:

    1. Very few of us have been vegan since birth. 99 percent of us were raised with your beliefs, that it’s normal and acceptable to use other individuals, animals, for our personal enrichment and satiety. We don’t need to listen to your side. We live in a culture of your side. I can’t turn on the TV or leave my house without being forced to experience your side. At the risk of sounding arrogant, what can you tell me about your side that I haven’t already been exposed to over the last 40 years?

    2. There is altogether too much effort in the animal rights community to be tolerant and nonjudgmental of people with regressive and unethical belief systems. I’m sure there are other bloggers who will play these ego feedback loops with you: love the sinner, hate the sin; oppose the act, not the actor. Since your interest in learning about animal rights is limited to only learning from vegans who will pet you and tell you how wonderfully humane you are, go find one.

    3. Yes, we’re liberals, but we’re not idiots. There is a difference. (If joking about abortion is wrong, I don’t want to be right.)

Kezia — love this post (and your follow-up comment). Point #1 in the “reasons for not posting comments from animal exploiters” is one of the best things I’ve read in a while. Thank you for this…
