Blogtrolls and look out, Sri Lankans.

Lately the Thinking Vegan’s Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/TheThinkingVegan) has been infiltrated by people in the ag industry – cattle ranchers, dairy ranchers, etc.

From the “plants have feelings too” crowd to “god wants us to eat animals” to “I’ll eat an extra hamburger for you,” we’ve had about all the bases covered. (I must say I love the “I’m eating your share” crowd. It’s so awesomely playground. The next time someone tells me they’re pro-life I’m going to say, “Ha ha, I’m going to abort an extra fetus just for you, sucka.”)

The latest, troll #6, went with the happy meat angle:

“Dont take this in a bad way. But I raise cattle and we feed our cattle before we eat! We meet their needs before ours. Yes there are people that treat animals cruely they’re the ones that have given the whole thing a bad name. Dont judge us all from a small percentage of people…Maybe you should take the time to get to know some of us in animal agriculture before condemning us.”

Sure. Don’t take this in a bad way, but I breed Sri Lankans, keep them confined, and kill them for meat, which I sell to cannibals. Of course there are bad apples in every profession, but most of us take really good care of our Sri Lankans before we kill them. In the mornings, they eat before we do! They’re adorable when they’re young; I get very attached to them. I have cried numerous times when a Sri Lankan got sick and died in my care despite the efforts of our vet. I have cried every time one of my favorite Sri Lankans goes to slaughter. So don’t condemn all of us until you get to know us.

I get so attached to my Sri Lankans when they're at this playful age. Why do they have to grow up? Why?

Welcome to The Thinking Vegan

February 7th, 2011 by Gary Smith

Welcome to The Thinking Vegan. You’re probably asking yourself if the world needs yet another vegan blog. The answer is obviously yes. At least I hope so.

The focus of the blog is on veganism as a social justice movement, as opposed to a dietary plan. Veganism is an ethical philosophy that encompasses the prohibition of animal use for food, clothing, entertainment, scientific “research,” labor and pets.

The blog’s philosophical bent is abolitionism and liberationism, which does not support any use of animals. I do not believe in reform measures or incremental ethics. There is no magical ladder that one climbs to become ethical. We all make real-world decisions and engage in behaviors that are either ethical or unethical. Veganism is the ethical choice.

If you have made the choice to move in that direction, I hope you will find support and encouragement on this blog. I will not, however, pat you on the head if you feel good about your choice to use animals. If you are looking for someone to validate your consumption of “organic” or “free range” or “grass fed” or “family farmed” animals, you may need to find another blog.

The Thinking Vegan will include articles and postings, short notes and ideas, interviews with thinkers and doers in the vegan/animal rights community, guest posts, and a thinking vegan’s take on newsworthy events.

Your comments are encouraged so please contribute to the discussion. I can guarantee that we won’t always agree. However my hope is that through this blog, with the feedback and participation of others, we can learn and grow as vegans and as animal rights activists.
