Attention Thinking Vegans: Free Money for Animal Activism and Outreach
We’re looking for the most innovative ideas in animal activism today, and we’re giving away money to fund them.
The Thinking Vegan is partnering with The Pollination Project (http://thepollinationproject.org) to award multiple grants for outstanding, and effective, animal activism. Every day of the week, The Pollination Project provides $1000 in seed funding to an individual or grassroots group making the world a better, more peaceful and more sustainable place. Recipients of grants from our partnership will receive $1000 U.S. dollars (in two installments) to fund, start, or expand their efforts to make the world better for animals.
Our ideal recipients are grassroots campaigns producing positive results for animals and/or promoting ethical veganism. Preference will be given to ideas and projects that can work on a broad scale. While this does not exclude local or regional grassroots activism, our hope is that the project will be something that can work in other places. For example, if your successful local campaign is a model or blueprint that other activists could carry out in their own communities, this would be a good candidate for funding. So if you’re acting locally…try to think globally too.
Please understand the following guidelines before applying:
- We will not fund established nonprofit organizations. If your group has been a nonprofit for less than one year, if your nonprofit status is still pending, or if you have fiscal sponsorship and need outside funding, you are welcome to apply, but the bar will be rather high.
- We will not fund projects that require very large budgets to have an impact. We all dream of what we would do for animals if we had a million dollars or even a hundred thousand dollars. We’re hoping for practical dreams that can be meaningfully moved toward reality with $1000. That said, if you need a million dollars to open the animal sanctuary of your dreams, and have already raised $999,000, well then, please do apply.
- We are not interested in funding special events, retreats, rentals of equipment or space, training/education registration fees for one person, travel expenses, legal expenses, publicity expenses, advertising expenses, or application fees. If you feel your project is otherwise very qualified, but requires one of these specific expenses for it to succeed, we are open to hearing about it.
- We will not fund media projects such as print or online magazines, podcasts, radio or television broadcasts. As PR professionals this could potentially create a conflict of interest for us both, so you would be better off sending your application directly to The Pollination Project. However, we are happy to help you strengthen your application.
- We discourage applications to fund films, theatrical performances, self-published books, music, or visual arts, not because we don’t believe in their potential to create change, but because this grant is not intended to fund passion and good intentions. Applicants engaged in these projects will need to have a clear strategy for distribution/dissemination, and be able to explain how this grant will be used towards realizing that strategy.
- We discourage applications from projects rooted in theistic or spiritual perspectives, again, because this grant is not intended to fund passion and good intentions. Applicants with a faith-based project will need to explain its broader potential beyond their own like-minded community.
- If you have already received a grant from The Pollination Project, congratulations, but you will not get an additional grant through us.
If despite these exclusions you still feel we should consider funding your project, by all means, let’s discuss it prior to your submission.

This program will run through May 31, 2014. We hope to be awarding grants to qualified projects within a few weeks of receiving the application, so don’t sit on it too long. We want to start giving away money, and seeing results, as soon as possible.

Hi Elaine, The Pollination Project does not fund established organizations or corporations. There have been rare exceptions, which is why we leave the door open for very early stage nonprofits or groups whose incorporation status is pending. Grants are intended to fund projects at the beginning of development and where a small amount of money will go a very long way. Love this concept to donate to such a good cause. I recently went on a vigil with an organization called Toronto Pig Save, they are dedicated to putting “glass walls” on Toronto slaughterhouses to promote veganism. I put together a video of the vigil, feel free to check it out if you’d like to see what it was about. The organization began as a small idea which is now a very well known animal activism group in the city and beyond. Very inspiring to those who are looking to start their own animal activist groups! 🙂
